LB Foster provides infrastructure materials for Sabine Pass LNG export facility extension contract
PITTSBURGH, June 04, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) – LB Foster Company (NASDAQ: FSTR), recently announced the supply of more than 3,000 tonnes of steel piles to engineering and construction contractor, Bechtel Energy Inc., for the construction of Cheniere Energy Partners, the third expansion project of LP’s Sabine Pass Liquefaction (SPL) marine berth. Construction of the berth is currently underway on the Sabine Pass Channel in Cameron Parish, Louisiana, using an innovative OPEN CELL ™ bulkhead design system to construct the LNG berth. LB Foster was involved in supplying material for this type of unique bulkhead design which was owner specified in 2007, requiring over 4,300 tonnes of steel piles to build SPL’s original mooring berths.
The berth OPEN CELL bulkhead design is a system designed and patented by PND Engineers, which uses PS31 flat core sheet piles, fabricated star connectors and H-anchor piles, which when viewed from above the structure, become a series of horizontal U-shaped membranes supported by soil contacting the recessed sheet pile tail anchor walls. The technical solution creates an integral reinforced soil system that can withstand heavy settlement and withstand a variety of loads. Most of the steel materials have been coated with glass flake epoxy for additional corrosion protection.
LB Foster worked closely with supplier partners Gerdau and Steel Dynamics to manage the delivery of steel sheets and H piles from mid-2020 and installation was completed in April 2021.
Sabine Pass’s LNG facility infrastructure is designed to support its high volume of LNG shipments. As reported on Cheniere’s website, the third berth will be used to load ships with LNG for export and is sized to accommodate ships with a carrying capacity of between 125,000 and 180,000 cubic meters of LNG. .
OPEN CELL ™ is a trademark of PND Engineers, Inc.
